Cordova High School

The track meet season officially kicked off for Whitney on Saturday, Feb. 24th … at least for the distance squad and a couple field events, that is.  Sophomore Jared Regan will forever be acknowledged as the first Whitney Track & Field athlete to compete in the 2018 season, as he stepped to the line and ran the open 3200m, accomplishing a personal best by nearly a full minute!  Freshman Kirsten Ransford and sophomore Brooke Giorgi also ran the 3200, placing 2nd and 3rd respectively, both nearly breaking 12 minutes and each placing in the top 10 all-time on Whitney’s records list.  Sophomore Austin Vasquez placed 4th in the varsity 3200, nearly breaking 10 minutes, and setting a lifetime personal best.

In the mens varsity 4x800m relay, seniors Julian Templeton, Austin Shields, Josh Kling, and sophomore Ethan Dodge teamed up to easily win their heat.  The same line-up came back later and placed 2nd overall in the distance medley relay (DMR).  Seniors Meghan Townsley and Avery Lambrite joined Kirsten and Brooke in the DMR, placing 2nd overall.

To demonstrate the strength of our distance team, Whitney girls placed 7th out of nearly 30 schools in the team scoring–and that was from only the distance squad!!!  On the guys side, we did have a pole vault team that got first, but the rest of Whitney’s team points were all from distance races, and our varsity men placed 4th as a team!
